2025 remote work trends

Only a few years ago, the term ‘workplace’ was fully synonymous with office buildings and 9-to-5 schedules. Now, it has expanded into an ecosystem that accommodates diverse arrangements, especially since the pandemic and the tension businesses faced between balancing operational goals with employee expectations.

Post-pandemic, employee and employer expectations, technology, culture, and political trends have continued to shape 2025 remote work trends. As we approach 2025, the pervading idea is that the workplace needs to adapt to human needs rather than constraining them. However, some trends may see us going back to pre-pandemic workplaces.

In this article, we explore the question of remote and hybrid teams and how the workplace will be run in 2025, as various trends show.

1. The Push for Return to Office

The pandemic rapidly accelerated the shift that continues to influence 2025 remote work trends. But now, four years after the experiment has been tried, many business leaders are not pushing for employees to return to the office. According to the KPMG 2024 CEO outlook, the share of CEOs favoring in-office work has increased from 34% to 79% within a year.

The key concern, apparently, is not that the remote work trial failed. Rather, it is more likely that employers are simply looking for means to cut costs, and since flexible, remote work has been offered as a perk by many companies, removing it would likely encourage employees to quit. That way, they won’t have to effect mass layoffs.

Companies like Amazon have already set this in motion, with CEO Andy Jassy announcing that all employees must be in the office five days a week starting in January 2025. There is no question as to the efficiency of remote work. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported increased productivity in remote work across 61 private business sectors.

How employees react to these mandates will shape 2025 remote work trends significantly. There’s already some mass resistance, but whether many employees would be willing to lose their jobs instead of working from the office is still a question to be answered.

2. Shifting from Fully Remote to Hybrid

Although some of the RTO mandates, such as Amazon’s, are strict in requiring full weekdays spent at the office, the majority of employers are willing to compromise with a hybrid work model. This combines the flexibility of remote work with the undeniable benefits of in-person interaction.

Also, since not all roles require daily in-person presence, hybrid setups allow businesses to tailor work requirements based on the nature of specific jobs, thus creating a more personalized approach to workplace arrangements.

According to the Ladders report, hybrid work model opportunities are regaining traction, especially in higher-paying roles. This can be seen as a competitive advantage in attracting top talent. According to the report, the following table shows the change in job listings based on the work setting, hybrid, in-person, and remote:

3. Workforce Globalization

Ever since remote work became a huge thing, the workforce has become more globalized, and businesses are increasingly able to tap into a global talent pool while avoiding barriers and challenges related to relocation.

However, with the shift toward in-office and the hybrid work model, former constraints on global workforce dynamics can be reintroduced. Hybrid models clearly allow some degree of remote flexibility, but they may reinforce a preference for talent situated near major business centers while disadvantaging top talent located elsewhere.

As we approach 2025, companies will need to explore ways to maintain a global workforce while fostering connections. This approach supports a more inclusive talent strategy. So, in short, the direction companies choose in implementing the hybrid work model and RTO policies will determine whether globalization in the workforce.

4. Evolving Performance Management Metrics

Performance management metrics will evolve in response to the foregoing 2025 remote work trends. During the pandemic era, companies hyper-focused on output and results-driven performance, as necessitated by fully remote work. However, in time, organizations have begun to integrate elements that account for in-person engagement, team dynamics, and challenges specific to the hybrid work model.

Before then, organizations anchored performance management during the fully in-person era to observable workplace behaviors: punctuality, visible hours worked, physical presence in meetings, and manager-observed interactions. However, for hybrid work, managers are designing performance metrics to evaluate both individual contributions and collaborative efforts.

So, communication and engagement metrics will continue to be prominent in measuring performance. For employees, this means that performance reviews will continue to be more continuous and contextual. Traditional annual reviews are giving way to real-time feedback mechanisms and reassessments with shorter durations.

5. AI-Powered Collaboration

What really makes all these innovations and changes possible is technology, specifically AI-powered tools. In collaboration, AI in remote work has made both remote and hybrid setups not only feasible but highly flexible. For instance, there’s been a proliferation of real-time meeting transcription tools like Fireflies AI and Otter that can automatically generate summaries of virtual meetings, capturing key decisions and follow-up actions.

On the leadership end, Korn Ferry’s survey showed that about 65% of global business leaders are welcoming of the impact of AI. Also, CEOs (73%) and senior executives in general (80%) are confident that AI will significantly enhance their value in the coming years. This is not surprising, considering how much operational friction AI in remote work reduces.

Employers also get to use tools designed for AI in remote work to measure performance by collecting and analyzing data on employee activities and outcomes. Overall, this also enables employees to know where to stand as well as areas in which to elevate their performance.
